This Hybrid Cross-Genre Course is designed to explore a variety of literary genres and use them as inspiration for your own writing. Participants will select one or more genres to focus on, using the chosen materials as models for their own writing. The course will include workshops, feedback sessions, and collaborative activities to enhance your writing process. Through brainstorming, drafting, editing, and publishing, you will develop your own unique writing style.

Goal: To explore and experiment with different literary genres while developing an original portfolio and refining personal voice through the writing process.

🧠 Week 1: “Genres & Journeys”

🔹 Introduce course structure and goals
🔹 Explore the range of literary genres (poetry, fiction, memoir, flash fiction, etc.)
🔹 Begin creative warm-up writing
🔹 Choose 1–2 genres to focus on for your personal project

 

✍️ Week 2: “Find Your Spark”

🔹 Learn brainstorming techniques and writing prompts by genre
🔹 Read and analyze mentor texts
🔹 Begin drafting your first short piece
🔹 Peer sharing: “What draws me to this genre?”

 

🔁 Week 3: “Voice, Style & Experimentation”

🔹 Explore narrative voice and tone across genres
🔹 Practice mimicking and then breaking conventional genre forms
🔹 Writing activity: Switch genre tones (e.g., rewrite memoir as a poem)

 

Week 4: “Flash, Micro & Short-Form Magic”

🔹 Dive into flash fiction, micro memoir, and short poems
🔹 Learn about conciseness, subtext, and strong openings
🔹 Peer feedback: Early drafts and impressions
🔹 Optional: Flash writing challenge

 

💬 Week 5: “Workshops in Action”

🔹 Full peer workshop sessions
🔹 Give and receive focused feedback
🔹 Begin revising based on input
🔹 Refine your portfolio direction and project outline

 

🔍 Week 6: “Editing Like a Writer”

🔹 Study revision strategies from published authors
🔹 Practice editing for rhythm, clarity, tone, and genre expectations
🔹 Apply editing tools to a revised draft
🔹 One-on-one mini-conferences (optional)

🔹 Learn strategies for reading aloud and sharing work
🔹 Finalize at least one polished piece
